How can I protect a loved one from slips-and-falls?

While slip-and-fall accidents can happen to virtually anyone, they're especially hazardous for the elderly. That's why it's important to safeguard your senior loved ones against potential accidents in and outside of the home, as these accidents may have potentially devastating consequences. In this case, the Mayo Clinic offers the following tips on how you can help your loved one lower the chance of a slip-and-fall.

Remove clutter from the home

Navigating around a cluttered home is a challenge for many seniors. Make sure furniture is arranged in a way that creates clear pathways to and from rooms. Also, boxes or other items left on the floor should be put away. If the home has carpeting, make sure it's not impeding your loved one. If so, consider replacing with tile or wood flooring, which is safer for people with mobility issues.

Install assistive devices

Along with clearing out a home, there are also devices you can install to reduce potential issues. In the bathroom, armrests can be added to toilet seats to help with sitting and standing. Non-slip floor mats in the bathroom, as well as the kitchen, are also beneficial. Because stairs can often be a challenge, two sets of rails are recommended on either side.

Visit the doctor

Health conditions make seniors more susceptible to slips-and-falls. If your loved one wears glasses, make sure the prescriptions are up-to-date. Poor vision contributes to falls, especially in low-light areas. Doctors can also help with knee or hip problems, which can be aided by devices like walkers and canes. Not only will proper medical care reduce a senior's risk of falls, but it can also greatly improve a person's quality of life overall.
